Social Justice Stories

building compassion, tolerance, and responsible citizenship through social justice narratives

The Righteous Smuggler is set in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, a country in North-West Europe. The people of the Netherlands are known as the Dutch. Persecution of the Jews in the Netherlands began immediately after the Nazis invaded in 1940. Many citizens collaborated - meaning they volunteered to assist the German Nazis. By 1942, Dutch Jews were being deported to concentration camps in Poland. There were, however, people who chose to fight back. The Righteous Smuggler tells the story of those who assisted groups dedicated to fighting Nazi occupation and helping to rescue Jews. For example, 4,500 Jewish children were saved in the Netherlands, successfully hidden from the Nazis. By war's end, however, many did not survive. About 75% of Dutch Jews were killed in the Holocaust.
