A young boy of twelve who lives in Amsterdam. He is Christian but has many Jewish friends and neighbors. Hendrick becomes deeply angered by the injustices suffered by the Jews at the hands of both the Nazis and his fellow Dutch citizens. He is moved to help, risking his life to assist his friends and neighbors who are in so much danger.


Hendrik's father is a Dutch fisherman. A courageous man who believes that it is his duty to help anyone who is in need, he and his wife pass this conviction on to his son.


Hendrik's mother. She worries and is overprotective, but supports her son and husband in their efforts to come to the aid of those who are in need.


A very close Jewish friend whom Hendrik and his father assist when he and his family are in danger.

Old Sea Dog

A fisherman who also believes that what is happening in Amsterdam is wrong and, along with Hendrik and his father, helps to save the lives of Jewish citizens who must evade capture by the Nazis.
